Obituary

Lilace Jenkins, 85, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, died April 19, 2008, at Lilly and Syringa in Idaho Falls.

She was born July 26, 1922, the third daughter of Lemuel Nephi Burke and Caroline Pierce Burke. She grew up and attended schools in Iona, where she graduated from Iona High School. After graduation, she attended Albion State Normal School, at Albion, Idaho. From 1971-1973, she attended Bakersfield Junior College at Bakersfield, California, where she received an associates degree in Library Technology.

In 1946, she married Thomas C. Hofferd in Iona. They made their home in Bakersfield for 23 years. To this marriage came a son, Thomas John Hofferd.

After the death of Tom, she returned to Iona and lived with her mother until 1974, when she married Leonard V. Jenkins of St. Anthony.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a Sunday School secretary, Primary teacher, counselor, secretary and president, ward librarian, and genealogy coordinator. She also served as a Primary Stake Board Member in the Bakersfield Stake. With her husband, she served in the Group Leadership in Yellowstone Park at Canyon and Old Faithful during the summer. In the winter, they served as fellowshipping missionaries at Furnace Creek and also for several seasons conducted weekly church services.

She worked at Kaiser Ship Yards in Vancouver, Washington, during World War II. She belonged to the USO, worked for various variety stores, book stores, and Bakersfield Junior College Library as a Clerk Typist. She also worked at Yellowstone Park at Old Faithful Inn Gift Shop, Death Valley National Monument, Furnace Creek, and Scotty's Castle bookstore.

She enjoyed family history research, working in the temple, crocheting, quilt making, cooking, spending time and doing things with her grandchildren.

She is survived by the following: son, Tom Hofferd of Delaware sister, Joyce (Bill) Read of Rigby grandson, Kevin Hofferd of California grandson, Brian Hofferd of California step-children: Terry Reynolds of Boise; Jared (Judy) Evans of Boise; Susan Habler of Woodburn, Oregon; Vern (Kylene) Jenkins of St. Anthony; Bill (Liz) Jenkins of Boise. She is preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters, Azilee, Erma, Marj and Una, both husbands, and a step-son, Byron Jenkins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 Noon, Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the Idaho Falls Fourth Ward Chapel, 955 Memorial Drive, by Bishop Kevin Hathaway. The family will meet with friends for an hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at the Parker Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary.
