Obituary

Malachi Lave'atu Osai, 75, of Idaho Falls, passed peacefully at his home on April 5, 2015. He was born April 20, 1939 in Nomuka, Tonga to Osai Lauia and Vailini Kamoto Vakafutu. Malachi grew up in Nomuka and attended Liahona High School graduating in 1959. He attended Ricks College in Rexburg, ID from 1961-1962. While he was attending Ricks College he met Betty Lou Olsen. They were married on Dec. 28, 1962 in St. Anthony, ID. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland California LDS Temple. Malachi was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various leadership positions such as: Seventy, High Priest, Nursery Leader, Executive Secretary, High Council, Home Teacher, Bishop's Counselor, Deacon's Quorum Advisor, and Sunday School President and other positions. He was a member of the first Tongan Ward in the U.S. Malachi was a loving, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed working, singing, fishing, dancing, joking, and serving. It was his foremost goal to bring his family from Tonga to America for a better life which he accomplished. Malachi said "I am a poor man, my position is to help, not to be successful. Enjoy your life, don't be a burden, remember where you came from. I don't wear a ta'ovala, the low and the dirty is my position. I wear a nice suit and tie to show respect to my father. We came to America." Survivors include: Wife; Betty Osai, of Idaho Falls, Daughter; Vailini Beth Osai, of Wahiawa, HI Daughter; Ana Osai-Serumalani of Idaho Falls, Son; John Osai of Idaho Falls, Son; Malachi Osai of West Jordan, UT, Son; Jefferson Osai of San Bruno, CA, Daughter; Sisilia Osai of Ucon, Daughter; Suliana Leilua of Idaho Falls, Son; Keith Osai of Idaho Falls, Sister; Vangana Mafi of San Bruno, CA, Sister; Fualupe Ofa of San Bruno, CA, Sister; Panitita Fetu'u of Sacramento, CA, Mother-in-law; Beth Olsen of Iona, ID, 31 grandchildren 7 great-grandchildren, and many wonderful in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Malachi was preceded in death by his Father; Osai Lauia, Mother; Vailini Kamoto Vakafutu, brothers; Kali Osai, and Viliami Osai, and a sister; Ana Sila and great granddaughter Suliana Keola. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Ucon LDS Stake Center 2967 E. 105th N. The family will receive family and friends from 6-10 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2015 and from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the Stake Center. Interment will take place in the Iona Cemetery.
