She was born February 5, 1924, in London, England, to George Newman and Ethel Button Newman. She grew up in London and graduated from parochial school in 1939. She served in the Women's Land Army.
On March 10, 1945, she married Eugene P. Townsend in London. They came to the United States in 1946. She worked at various jobs and in 1952, they moved to Idaho Falls. They lived on a small farm and raised livestock. Her husband died Jan. 26, 1996.
She enjoyed knitting, reading, sewing, upholstery, her animals, and the mountains. Marguerite was a very strong, loving, kind person, who will be greatly missed.
She is survived by the following: son, Laurence Townsend of Rosalia, Washington,a daughter, Jeanette (Bruce) Empey of Firth and a daughter, Patricia Bird of Ammon, 2 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Townsend; a brother and a sister.
A family gathering and visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.coltrinmortuary.com .
