Obituary

Mark Woodrow Smith, 95, of Idaho Falls and formerly of West Covina, California, passed away March 2, 2011, at his home in Idaho Falls. He was born July 5, 1915, in Spanish Fork, Utah, to Clarence E. and Edna W. Johnson Smith. His family of twelve brothers and sisters worked hard on their small family farm. He attended two years of college at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he participated in track and football. On November 21, 1936, he married Gladys V. Hofler. Their marriage was solemnized in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on March 23, 1940. They moved to Southern California in search of employment. Mark began a lifetime career in law enforcement and fraud prevention. He worked with the Coast Guard during World War II. He served as Chief Investigator of the Police Commission for the Los Angeles Police Department. Later he worked at Rockwell, with the Space program. He also worked as a special agent for the insurance Crime Prevention Institute. He built his own home in West Covina, California, where he lived most of his life. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, family vacations, and watching sports on television. He retired in St. George, Utah. Mark served faithfully as a Bishop, Stake President, Temple Sealer, and Patriarch in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was known as a kind and generous leader, who gave of his time and finances to family and friends. He was deeply patriotic, and contributed funds to his party of choice on a yearly basis. He had a love for young people and enjoyed his calling as a "greeter" at church, where he made young and old feel welcome. He was an exemplary son, brother, father, and grandfather. He made everyone feel loved and important. In 2004, his wife, Gladys, passed away. He moved to Idaho Falls in 2005, and on August 10, 2006, he married Shirley I. Higham. They were good companions. They lived at Fairwinds-Sandcreek for their four and a half years together. Shirley's family of eight children and over a hundred grandchildren made Mark feel loved and accepted. Mark is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Idaho Falls; daughter, Karen L. Almond of Idaho Falls; sons: Brian M. (Carolynn) Smith of Carlsbad, California, and Steven C. (Jenelle) Smith of Victorville, California; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; sister, May Ohlin of Roy, Utah; and brother, Reed J. Smith of Camarillo, California, all of whom will greatly miss him. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011, at the Crestwood LDS Ward Chapel, 2055 Coronado, Idaho Falls, Idaho. The family will visit with friends at the church one hour prior to the services. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Woodside LDS Chapel 15030 Fairgrove Avenue in La Puente California. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Covina Hills Memorial Park in Covina, California, on March 12, 2011. Local arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls.
