Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Hansen Smith was born August 6, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she grew up with her parents, Clyde Free Hansen and Marian Andelin Hansen, and three precious siblings, Wayne, Don and Ruth. She was a talented dancer, had a great sense of fun and adventure (she waterskied on her 75th birthday!), was an extraordinary student, active in all kinds of extracurricular activities, and just brimming with class and loveliness. Not surprisingly, she was sought after by a host of eager suitors. While struggling to solve the question as to which was the one for her, a handsome gentleman from Idaho by the name of Albon came upon the scene and solved the riddle handily; he quickly became the only man in heaven and earth for Mary. They were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on May 31, 1946, roughly 25,000 glorious days before he passed away on July 17, 2013. Each day thereafter, though she had a smile on her face and constant love, compliments, and gratitude on her lips, she missed him as if her heart would break. How joyful then for us, their children, to know that this matched set is reunited. :'D Mary passed peacefully away in her sleep at home on December 10th, 2014. Although it was a medical impossibility (because of a severe leak in her heart), she was blessed to lucidly and with relatively little pain enjoy two extra days of life surrounded by a steady stream of family and other loved ones coming, calling, and video chatting from across the globe to express their love and admiration. We found that as per usual, whatever we gave to this singular woman, we got double back in return. One of her greatest joys in life consisted of nuzzling, reading to, or otherwise earning a giggle or smile from a child. She wanted as many children as the Lord would send her, despite the danger and discomfort to herself, and felt so blessed to raise ten children, her youngest born when she was 45. To her delight, her posterity kept her knee-deep in babies every minute since, giving her 75 great-grandchildren and 60 grandchildren, the 60th arriving just this year! She revels in both womanhood and motherhood. Somehow she brought us all to adulthood without the aid of a single packaged meal or drive-thru; we can all wish we had a dime for every vegetable she planted, watered, weeded, harvested, cleaned, cut, cooked and servedand a nickel for every loaf of bread! Yet she still managed to make time for several other interests, including being president of Republican Women, singing in Choralaires, and fulfilling constant church callings. Mary is a woman of God. She was a worrier by nature, but her faith overcame her fear in every instance and we saw many miracles because of it. She told us routinely that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was central to her happiness and much more than that, she provided sure and steady footsteps for us to follow. There was not a loophole to be found anywhere, and we were looking! She was anxiously engaged in a good cause, always, from the time she was a small child, caring joyfully for her bedridden grandmother. One of her hardest trials in life, as her little body became more bent and ridden with pain, was to no longer be able to serve at full throttleand that was usually because we wouldn't let her! This lovely woman had no concept of just how many hearts and lives she has touched, nor how deeply, because her love of the Savior and others flows so freely from her, but we, along with them, "arise up and call her blessed" (Proverbs 31:28).
