Michael Dean Hiatt, age 67, died on March 13, 2022, at Idaho Falls Community Hospital from complications due to COVID.
Michael was born on July 3, 1954, in Boise, Idaho, to Dean and Lorraine Hiatt. He spent his childhood in Boise, graduating from Boise High School. In high school he developed a love for band and all things cars, especially racing. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at age 18 and served a church mission in San Antonio, Texas. He attended college at Boise State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, going on to teach in Idaho, Oklahoma, and Texas. He spent almost 15 years teaching elementary and middle school with a particular love of teaching Math.
Graduating with his master's degree from Sul Ross State University in 1994, Mike became a marriage and family therapist. He then moved from teaching to counseling, enjoying his position working with middle and high school children who needed help during the pivotal changing time in their life. He was a patient and loving counselor to his students, other clients, and many others he met and helped along the way. Mike also had a love of sign language that allowed him to increase the amount of people he could help, counsel and teach. He devoted much of his life to loving and serving the deaf community.
He was married to Annette Danes in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple on January 6, 1979. Together they raised 8 children. In 2019, he lost Annette to cancer and shortly after her passing, he met and fell in love with Stacey Reese. On March 14, 2020, Mike and Stacey were sealed in the Idaho Falls, ID LDS Temple.
Mike was a peacemaker who always tried to find ways to make both sides happy. He had a very strong spirit and trusted his Father in Heaven in all things. He loved playing board games, snowmobiling, old fashioned diners, Nascar, and was Boise State University's biggest fan. With all the different things that he enjoyed in life, his favorite calling was that of being a father. had a great sense of humor, a contagious laugh, and a good heart that was always finding ways to serve others.
Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Annette, his stepson Michael, and his parents, Dean and Lorraine Hiatt.
He is survived by his loving wife, Stacey, his 8 children: Jared (Kaci) Hiatt, Rachel (Brandon) Holloway, Adam (Shannon) Hiatt, Sarah (Jon) Farrell, Esther (Nathan) Manwaring, Caleb (Sara) Hiatt, Noah, Abby (Greg) Christiansen, 3 step-children: Melissa (Brad) Stapleton, John Reese, Jacob (EmmaLee) Reese, and 26 grandchildren; and his sister, Sue Conte.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Mike touched are invited to a viewing at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Friday, March 18, 2022, from 6-8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral services at the stake center. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2022, at the Idaho Falls Stake Center, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1155 First St. Idaho Falls. Interment will be in the Ammon Cemetery.
