Obituary

Milburn Hawker Jr. 90, of Monteview, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008.

He was born October 20, 1917, Los Angeles, California, to Milburn Lorenzo Hawker, and Dorothy Evelyn Taylor Hawker.

In his childhood he lived in Corvallis, MT, and Oakland and Berkley, CA, before moving to the family farm in Mud Lake, ID in February of 1929.

His education came from going to school in the various places he lived, including the one room schoolhouse in Mud Lake. He attended school in Corvallis, MT, and eventually graduated from Shelley High School in 1935.

He married Berniece Matteson in 1937 and they were later divorced.

In the late 30's and 40's he worked on the county roads with horses and a Fresno. This included the road from Mud Lake to Birch Creek. He also helped his Dad farm and ranch, doing everything from haying, to raising chickens, milking cows, and herding sheep. They did what they could to earn money in those difficult times.

Milburn joined the Navy in 1944 and was trained to be a turret gunner on an ATV Avenger torpedo bomber. The war ended. While waiting to be discharged, he took private flying lessons, and received his pilot's license. He was honorably discharged in Feb. 1946.

With his father needing surgery, Milburn went home to Mud Lake to help out, and never went back to California, as he had planned.

He moved to Monteview in 1951, raising hay, cattle, and grain. He also helped build the Monteview road.

He married Lois Ellis Moore on July 2nd, 1953 at the Community Baptist Church in Mud Lake.

He worked at the newly created National Reactor Testing Station for 10 years, and then focused on farming and ranching until his retirement.

In the 60's he and a group of friends partnered in owning various aircraft. Piloting was a hobby that he couldn't get enough of. He was a member of the AOPA for over 60 years.

He and Lois loved to camp, fish, and play cards with friends and relatives. He was also a motorcycle and snowmobile enthusiast. They traveled to many places of interest.

In the late 1980's he became involved in the West Jefferson Senior Citizens Center. He served on the board for many years including being a delegate to District 6 Area Agency and Chairman of the Area Agency on Aging in Idaho Falls.

He survived by his daughters; Jann (Joel) Moskovita of Boise, Idaho and Jill (Wayne) Torgerson of Monteview, Idaho; his son Ben (Pam) Hawker of Idaho Falls; sisters, Pat Chase of Boise, and Kathy Daniels of Blackfoot; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sons, and his brother.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Mud Lake Community Church in Terreton, Idaho with Pastor Bryan Gomez officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 Saturday prior to the services at the church. Burial will take place in the Dubois Cemetery, in Dubois, Idaho.
