Dr. Dan Smith of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on September 24, 2023, in Provo, Utah, in hospice care, after enjoying a heart-warming week of visits from family and friends, including numerous sessions of singing fun old songs with his wife, Vickie, children, and grandchildren.

Oliver Daniel Smith was born October 10, 1941, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the second of 14 children to Dr. David Harlin Smith and Shirley June Hendrickson Smith. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1959. He served in the Southern Far East Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1960 to 1963, laboring in Taiwan.

He married Vickie Lynne Alder in the Salt Lake City, Utah, Church of Jesus Christ Temple on September 17, 1964. He attended Ricks College, the University of Utah, and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, graduating in 1969. He served as a physician in the United States Army from 1970 to 1976. He practiced medicine in Idaho Falls from 1972 until 2020, including with his father and brother at the Smith Clinic, at nursing homes, and in hospice care.

He and Vickie worked in Beijing, China, in 2008. They served three LDS missions together, in Singapore (Sarawak), Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Houston, Texas.

Dr. Dan was an Eagle Scout, a scoutmaster, and an Explorer Scout leader, and received the Silver Beaver Award. He and Vickie sang in the Sounds Choir and had leading roles in the choir's musical theater productions. He was active in membership and leadership of multiple medical associations and musical organizations.

Dr. Dan played piano and organ. He loved the outdoors, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and climbing the Grand Teton. He traveled to Nepal in 1977 to hike to Mt. Everest base camp with friends and fellow physicians. He summited Popocatepetl volcano and attempted Mount Rainier. He loved traveling with his family, and also by motorcycle. He and Vicki journeyed all over the world for medical responsibilities and service opportunities.

In retirement, Dr. Dan and Vickie resided in Island Park, Idaho, and Ephraim, Utah.

Dr. Dan and Vickie are the parents of six children: Rebecca Lynne Netjes (Shawn), Thomas Daniel Smith (Valerie), Cynthia Jean Iglinski (David), Sarah JoAnn Fencl, Wendel Evan Smith (Amberlee), and Michelle Smith Willis (Spencer). They have 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Dan is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: David, Dick, Doug, and Don; and his sister, Darla.
