Obituary

Orland Bailey passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017, doing what he loved—serving others.

Orland was born on December 16, 1927, to Jesse and Mercy Bailey of Ammon, Idaho. He was the eleventh child in this family. He attended school at Ammon Grade School, Eastside Grade School and O.E. Bell Jr. High School. When Orland was in the second grade in Ammon, the school house burned down. He attended school for two years in the bottom of the old Ammon LDS church. The new school was built by the W.P.A. in 1936.

Before starting high school, Orland and his father were helping another farmer thrash his crop of grain. They were both running a team of horses and a wagon. After his father had unloaded at the thrashing machine and went out in the field to get another load, his team ran away with him and he was thrown from his wagon and seriously injured. They didn't think he would survive. Orland's brother, Orval, was serving in Germany during the war and his little brother, Francis, was in grade school so Orland had to quit school and go to work to provide for his father, mother, and little brother. His father was not able to work for three years. This was the end of Orland's schooling.

Orland met and dated Elmoyne Woolf for a short time. They were married on the 28th of September 1946. It was tough going for a while, until Orland was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad after 40 years. Orland loved his job and all the men he worked with. They all looked up to him for advice when a problem came up.

He served for eighteen months with the 116th Army National Guard and four years with the Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on January 24, 1961. He served for thirty years on the Ammon Volunteer Fire Department. For more than eighteen years, he went out almost daily in his pickup, that all his friends recognized, serving various organizations in the Idaho Falls Community collecting food to feed the hungry. Orland's life was centered on service.

Orland was preceded in death by his darling wife of 70 years and best friend—Elmoyne Lorraine, his mother and father, and eleven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Toni (Richard) Heir of San Diego, sons: Kevin (Linda) Bailey of Pocatello, and Robert (Tammy) Bailey of Idaho Falls; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren—He was so proud of all of them.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the Ammon LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 2150 Avocet, Ammon, Idaho. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m., Friday, November 24, 2017, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, and from 9:30-10:45 a.m., prior to the services at the church.
