Surrounded by loved ones, Raymond Donald Thompson, 80, of Idaho Falls died October 29, 2009, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born June 2, 1929, in Roberts, Idaho, the fifth child born to Aaron Milton and Fern Rider Thompson. Raymond was raised in the Hamer area where he attended school. In 1947, he graduated from Hamer High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Following his return to the states, he worked for Joe Laird as a ranch hand. On March 21, 1956, he married Delores Henman in Hamer. They ranched and farmed in the Mud Lake area where their 5 children were born. Raymond and Delores moved to Dubois where he worked at the U.S. Sheep Experimental Station. Raymond joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1975 and remained an active member. He held various district and state offices. Due to Raymond's health, they moved to Idaho Falls in 1996. Raymond enjoyed woodworking, making knives, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his loving wife, Delores and five children: Donette (Loyd) Engberson of Monteview, Idaho; Gloria (Mike) Ostler of Worland, Wyoming; Rod (Diane) Thompson of Morrison, Colorado; Bruce (Brenda) Thompson of Centralia, Washington; Virginia (Tony) Robinette of Middletown, Deleware; 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; a brother, Milton (Tommy) Thompson and brother-in-law, Warren Mitchell. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jake and Leo Thompson, and a sister, Dorothy Mitchell. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2009, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends Sunday evening, November 1, 2009, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the mortuary and Monday one hour prior to the services at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Dubois Cemetery with military rites at 2:00 p.m. following the services.
