Roger (Rogers) Cameron Diehl, 78, passed away August 19, 2019, in Iona, Idaho at his home.
Rogers was born February 20, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to Charles Frances and Wilda Juanita Connett Diehl. He grew up in Michigan where he attended Lincoln Consolidated Schools in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
He joined the Navy when he was seventeen. He served during the Cuban Blockade when the United States and Russia narrowly avoided a nuclear war in 1962. He left the Navy when his enlistment was up. He obtained his GED and attended Ferris State College. He worked as an apprentice electrician for General Motors and reenlisted in the Navy in 1964. He traveled around the world, including going through the Straights of Magellan and crossing the Equator more than once. He obtained his Pilot's license in 1966. He became a Chief Sonar Technician in 1968. He received his parachute jump certification in 1969.
He married Marilyn Ruth Olsen November 12, 1971, in the Idaho Falls Temple.
He worked as a Navy Recruiter in Pontiac, Michigan, was briefly stationed in San Diego and then went to the Mobile Technical Unit at Subic Bay, Philippines. At this time he also received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of La Verne in California.
After retiring from the Navy he worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the Department of Defense until he retired.
He held several positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, some of which were the following: Bishop twice, Bishops Counselor three times, Executive Secretary two times, Ward Clerk, Assistant Ward Clerk, Scout Master, Cub Scout Master, and High Councilman. He served as District Mission Leader, District Councilman and Executive Secretary in the Philippines and Branch Mission Leader in Quartzsite, Arizona, where he and his wife were also Stake Missionaries. He and his wife served in the Ogden Temple for two years.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ruth Olsen Diehl, of Iona, Idaho; a daughter, Lisa (Kenneth) DiCesare of Keene, New Hampshire; a daughter, Cherie Ward of Marne, Michigan; a son, David Diehl of Sandy, Utah; a daughter, Wendy (Daniel) Singer of Layton, Utah; a daughter, Kamela (Joel) Arevalo of Surprise, Arizona; a brother-in-law, Joseph Williams of St. George, Utah; and grandchildren: Eric and Elizabeth DiCesare, Collin Ward, Cameron Diehl, Taya Singer and Cadence Arevalo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Wilda Diehl; his father-in-law, Keith Olsen; his Sister, Nancy Lynn Williams; his sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and James Larsen; and a daughter, Ursula.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Iona Stake Center, 7555 North 55 th East. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Military honors will be awarded at 2:30 pm. Cremation under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com .
