Obituary

Shirley Jacobsen Black, 80, of Idaho Falls, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016, at Broadway Fields Assisted Living in Idaho Falls. She was under the care of Alliance Hospice.

Shirley was born February 15, 1936 to Olaf Jacobsen and Amelia Parramore Jacobsen in Provo, Utah. She attended high school at South High in Salt Lake and graduated in 1954. Shirley married Bruce K. Black on July 24, 1952, the marriage was later annulled because her mother objected and wanted Shirley to finish high school. After graduation, she re-married Bruce on May 28, 1954 in Salt Lake City; they recently celebrated 62 years of marriage together.

Shirley was a homemaker for many years and took care of her four children; she was especially devoted to the care of her son Mike who spent most of his life in a wheelchair. Shirley and her husband Bruce bought Bear Gulch Ski Resort in Ashton, Idaho in 1970, Shirley co-managed the business until 1979. Shirley served as manager of the Holmes location of Sinclair in Idaho Falls for 15 years. She worked at Budget Rent a Car until Bruce retired and they started Grandma's Ice Cream. They traveled with that business working in Quartzsite, Arizona in the winter and Idaho and Wyoming in the summer until 2010. After they sold Grandma's Ice Cream, they started and operated Grandma's Heaters and Fireplaces until she was no longer able to travel.

Shirley loved to travel and had been to England, Scotland, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Austria, and France.  She and Bruce also visited many of the 50 United States including Hawaii, the Bahamas and two cruises to Alaska. Shirley and Bruce loved boating and visited Lake Powell many times, camping, and spending time with their family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Bruce Black of Idaho Falls, three daughters, Shellie Shurtliff (Dennis) of Idaho Falls, Susan Steinman (Rudy) of Ashton, and Shauna Crofts (Rusty) of Evanston, Wyoming, a brother Richard Jacobsen (Janice), 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, three brothers, two sisters, and her son Michael Black.

The family would like to thank the care-givers at Broadway Fields Assisted Living and especially the residents who looked after her during her stay and treated her like family.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date with family and friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. Idaho Falls.
