Susan Latteier Richards, 59, passed away in her home in Idaho Falls early on August 15, 2012, after a valiant fight with cancer. Sue was born March 5, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Andrew Fielding Latteier and Shirley Hyde Latteier. She grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from Highland High School in 1971. Sue met her husband Bob at BYU where she received a BS in Dietetics and an MS in Nutrition Education. They were married April 22, 1975, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Provo, UT; Belfonte, PA; Lawton, OK; and moved to Idaho Falls, ID, twenty-seven years ago. Sue was a dietitian at Commanche County Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma, from 1983-1985. She was a dietitian at the Idaho Behavioral Health Center from 1985-1987. She was a dietitian in private practice in Idaho Falls from 1988-1994. For several years she wrote a weekly nutrition column for the Idaho Falls Post Register. She worked as a Diabetes Educator for Dr. John Liljenquist in Idaho Falls from 1995-2000; she dearly loved this phase of her career. Gifted and curious, Sue loved to learn. In 2000, she returned to school and enrolled in the non-traditional nursing program at BYU-Idaho. As a registered nurse, she worked in the Women's Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center from 2001-2012. As a young mother, Sue had a seemingly endless supply of energy, serving for a year as District 93 PTO President and was a founder and the first administrator of the Bonneville County School District Education Foundation. She contributed to her sons' scouting as a den leader; she also created a club for her daughters. Wonderfully talented, Sue was an accomplished musician and taught piano for twenty-five years, starting when she was 16. She was the founder of Music Kids and co-founder and co-director of the Music Connection. With her husband, she served as a Church Education System missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving as both an Institute Teacher and Choir Director in Idaho Falls in 2005 and then continued as Choir Director through 2010. She dearly loved the youth whom she led and taught. Sharing beautiful music brought Sue great joy. She served as a ward organist and organist at the Idaho Falls Temple for nearly ten years. Ever enthusiastic, Sue loved to travel, repeatedly exploring her family's roots in Europe and Great Britain. She also visited most of the states (Hawaii being her favorite), Canada and Mexico, and the orient (Philippines and China). Next to her homes, her favorite place on earth has always been Disneyland where she went to play with her family. During the last two decades of her life, Sue experienced significant health challenges; first with lupus, then breast cancer, and finally acute myeloid leukemia. While significantly reducing her energy and involvement in the community, these health challenges served to make her more aware of others' needs and enabled her to be unusually kind and sensitive to others' suffering and personal struggles. Sue is survived by her husband, Robert Elliott Richards; children Ben (Farrah) Richards, Rebekah Richards, Katie (Kelly) Carone, Emily Richards, Brenton (Heidi) Richards, JuliAnne (Nelson) Martinez; grandchildren Ryker, Lexy, Andrew, Cassie, Addylyn, James, Jack, Trenton, and Porter; mother Shirley Hyde Latteier, and siblings Andrea (David) VanWagoner, Paul (Marilyn) Latteier, and Julie (Rick) Lake; and countless friends. She has rejoined her father Andrew Fielding Latteier and brother Russell Hyde Latteier. Sue was an avid genealogist and spent many years researching and doing temple work for her ancestors. Her family has set up a memorial fund to help further this important work. Donations made to this fund will be donated to the LDS Church Temple Assistance Program. Donations can be made at any Chase bank. The account is in Robert Richards' name ending in 1221. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2012, at the Ammon LDS West Stake Center, 2055 Coronado. The family will visit with friends Sunday evening, August 19, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, Idaho, and from 11:30-12:30, prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
