Today I get to write something about our Mom, Sybil Fee. She died the morning of April 24, 2008 in her home in Idaho Falls. She had been losing ground to rheumatoid arthritis for some years and finally succumbed to cancer.
She was born October 20, 1924 to Gilbert and Cora Knutson in Spring Grove, Minnesota. She was pure Norwegian from both sides of the family. She was also the second of four children, and when the older son was killed in a logging accident, she inherited the eldest's duties as a farmhand. One of the duties being an experienced hand at running a team of horses.
She finished High School in South East Minnesota with classes varying from Economics, Bookkeeping and Shorthand to Biology and Algebra. She was also in the choir, a gir'ls glee club, a sextet, secretary of the senior class, a librarian and a reporter. After High School, she went on to attend Winona State Teachers College and taught school in Minnesota.
She married Russell Neil Fee on August 18, 1946. They honeymooned to Yellowstone Park and back in a 1938 Ford and then started farming in Minnesota. Sometimes using a tractor and other times using horses, they grew corn, oats and alfalfa. They also raised cattle, hogs and chickens, and sold eggs and cream to the local distributors.
Russ and Sybil moved to Bremerton, Washington for three years and then to Idaho Falls in 1957. Sybil taught school - primarily 4th grade - here for several years.
Russ and Sybil raised me, my younger brother and my little sister. They took us camping to many places in the U.S. and Canada. I remember our Mom as being too smart to mess with and being a close friend and confidante. She was very intellectual, musical, artistic and baked the best bread on the planet. She was a loving Mother and a charming and beautiful woman right to the end. She was our Mom.
Sybil's body will be cremated in Idaho Falls and her remains will be placed in a dual compartment urn with Russ's remains - Dad died last November 26th. There will be a Memorial Service for those who knew her at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on the corner of Sunnyside and Rollandet Tuesday, April 29 at 2pm. They will later be interred in a wall with a military ceremony at the Veteran's Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. In lieu of Flowers contributions may be made to the Happy Stitchers of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Idaho Falls.
