Obituary

Thelma C. Phillips Page, 94, died July 10, 2013 at the Gables in Idaho Falls. She was born in Dayton, Idaho on December 16, 1918 to Vernon M. Phillips and Bertha S. Callan Phillips. Thelma was 9 years old when the family moved to Ammon and later, to Osgood, Idaho. She graduated from Ammon High School in 1937, and married Archie (Art) F. Page soon after. Seven children joined the family: Patricia, Jerry, Stephen, Michael, Martha, Nancy, and James. The family lived in Ririe, Blackfoot, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls. Thelma earned her associate degree from Ricks College as a microbiologist while working as the quality control manager and shift chemist for Potato Growers in Idaho Falls and Pillsbury and French's potato processing plants in Shelley. She was instrumental in helping develop the now-famous "Tater Tots". She retired from Pillsbury in 1985. Art died in 1970 and Thelma continued working and pursuing her hobbies of crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She made many beautiful items for family and friends. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters as the "designated driver". They traveled to the west coast and around the intermountain west. She also was able to make a choice trip to Europe with sisters and to visit her son, Jim, when he was stationed in Germany. Stephen and Jim both served in the military, and her daughters all married Navy men, so she was able to travel to Hawaii, Florida, Connecticut, and California. Thelma enjoyed working as an officiator in the Idaho Falls Temple for several years, and served as a Primary teacher and in the Relief Society organization. After living in Idaho Falls for many years, in 2005 she sold her home and moved to Firth to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Nolan Freeman. She had lost her sight and was no longer able to pursue her hobbies of crocheting and quilting, but enjoyed and appreciated the audio books provided by the Talking Book Service in Boise and visiting with her sisters and brother on the phone. The family would like to thank Dr. Margaret Wagner and Nikki, Hearts for Hospice, and the nursing staff at The Gables. She is survived by her children, Pat (Nolan) Freeman of Firth, Nancy (Steve) Schellenberg of Idaho Falls, and Jim (Patti) Page of Pennsylvania, and sisters, Beth Gray of Idaho Falls and Geraldine (Ron) Barker of West Valley City, Utah; 26 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Art, 3 sons and a daughter, 6 sisters, 3 brothers, and 2 sons-in-law. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at the Idaho Falls LDS East Stake Center, 1860 Kearney with Bishop Todd Killpack presiding. The family will visit with friends Sunday evening, July 14, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls and Monday at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
