Thomas Richardson "Dick" Hill M.D., 81, of Idaho Falls passed away July 2, 2011. He was born May 23, 1930, to Leonidas Edwin Hill, Jr. and Josephine Fransioli Hill. He spent his first decade in his birthplace, Aberdeen, Washington and Everett. As a former naval officer his father was recalled in 1940 to work on engineering problems of torpedoes in Newport, Rhode Island, where the family joined him from 1941to1945. Like his father, he had enduring mechanical and electrical interests, but he eventually focused on medicine. After high school in Everett, he studied at Stanford, obtained his B.A. at the University of Washington and his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal. He interned in Detroit and did his anesthesiology residency in Denver, served as a U.S. Naval Officer in Okinawa and Bremerton; did research at the University of Washington; and taught physiology in physical education at Washington State University. In the later stages of his career, he was an anesthesiologist in private practice in Pullman, Washington, and at the Idaho Falls Surgical Center. As an alpinist, he climbed among other mountains, St. Helen, Rainier, Baker, Shuksan and Aconcagua (22,900) on the border of Chile and Argentina. He was a competitive swimmer, played tennis and golf well, skied downhill and cross country, and ran many foot races including the New York Marathon and others. He was an enthusiastic fisherman on the Snake River and an avid windsurfer in the Caribbean and many locations in the U.S. In retirement, he traveled widely in Europe, Greece, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, South America, China, Mexico and Thailand where he increased his bird counts and practiced amateur dendrology while visiting museums and viewing monuments. He also enjoyed building, installing and maintaining blue bird boxes around Idaho Falls. Thomas married Maria Middleton Williamson on September 11, 1993, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a member of Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society), Idaho Fish and Game Lifetime License holder, NRA, The Alpine Club, Lifelong Fitness Alliance, YMCA and The Coffee Club (The Youth Ranch locale). He is survived by his wife, Maria;sons: Kristofer Johnathon Hill of Sonoma, California, and Geoffrey Hamilton (Silvia) of London, England; brother, Leonidas E. Hill, III (Nancy) of Vancouver, British Columbia;stepchildren: Marcy Teresa Morgan (John Vranes) of Lewisville, Idaho; Mark Trusten Williamson (Tracy Crow) of Columbus, Ohio; Noelle Marie Walker of Idaho Falls, and Martina Joan Williamson of Salt Lake City, Utah; and step grandsons: Cory James Walker and Hayden Marcy Walker both of Idaho Falls. He parents and sister, Josephine Webster, predeceased him. A Celebration of Life will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Garr Gallery, Willard Arts Center, 450 "A" Street, Idaho Falls.
