Obituary

Yvonne (Cubby) Sommer - Bowman - Sessions of Idaho Falls passed away Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the age of 95. She was under the care of Encompass Hospice at The Gables Assisted Living Center. Born April 3, 1921 in Rexburg, Idaho, she was the youngest child of John Hogg McCulloch and Ella Peterson.

She was raised and attended school in Rexburg, graduating from Madison High School in 1939. She played the trombone in band and as a young girl, loved spending summers with her father at sheep camps in the mountains near Piney Pass.

On August 13, 1941 she married Ross Sommer. They had two sons Brent and Steve. They were later divorced.  On January 10, 1948 she married Joseph Thor Bowman, and from this marriage Boyd, Kathleen, Christine and Lori joined the family. In March, 1973, she married Lewis Sessions.

She moved to Idaho Falls in 1957 with her family where she resided until her death.  She attended Nursing School and received her L.P.N. certificate in 1971. She worked as a nurse in the old LDS Hospital and later completed training in coronary care that allowed her to work in the intensive care unit. She continued working as a nurse until her retirement in 1986.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a primary teacher, a visiting teacher and a scout leader in her church - hiking with her scouts to the top of the Menan Butte. She received her temple endowment in February 1997.

She was an active and lifelong member of the VFW auxiliary and held all the offices in this organization including president of Rexburg Auxiliary 3012 (1956-1957) and the Idaho Falls Auxiliary 2146 (1960-1961) and District 8 president in 1962. She loved her country and was very patriotic.

She loved playing pinochle, dancing, raising vegetables and flowers, garage sales, bowling and reading the Post Register every day. The last 30 years she enjoyed hosting family and friends at an annual 4th of July picnic in her backyard. She enjoyed the friendships and food at the Seniors Citizen Center.  She enjoyed camping and fishing and many times came away with the biggest catch. Every year she would spend hours picking huckleberries and use the huckleberries to make special treats (pies, jams).  After giving up her driver's license at 90 she still missed driving (maybe there are cars in heaven?).

She is survived by her sons: Brent Sommer (Linda), Steve Sommer (Sue), Boyd Bowman (Hedy); daughters: Kathleen Stevens Metcalf (Steve), Christine Taylor (Greg), and Lori Sayer (Brad); sister, Jeanette (Dixie) Tuckett; twenty-one grandchildren, sixty great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Ella McCulloch, sisters: Cora Flossie, Grace Wardle, Lucille Moeller, and brother, Stanley.

The funeral service will be held Friday, September 9th at 1:00 pm at the LDS 18th Ward Chapel, 1200 Dunbar in Idaho Falls. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 11:30 a.m. Interment at the Burton Cemetery.
